Mount Sabyinyo is a distinctive, extinct volcano located in the Virunga Mountain range, a region known for its rugged beauty and rich biodiversity. The mountain’s peak is shared by three countries: Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The name “Sabyinyo” comes from a local word meaning “old man’s teeth,” which reflects the jagged, tooth-like shape of its summit.
Part of the larger Virunga Massif, Mount Sabyinyo is situated near other famous volcanoes like Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke. The mountain stands at an elevation of about 3,669 meters (12,037 feet), making it one of the shorter peaks in the Virunga range, but its rugged and eroded appearance makes it a challenging climb. Its slopes are home to a number of wildlife species including the endangered mountain gorillas, elephants, buffaloes and various forest antelopes.
Mount Sabyinyo Hiking Experience
Hiking mount Sabyinyo can only be done from Uganda at the moment because a route has not been created among the sharp ridges in the Congo and Rwanda side. Of all the Virunga mountains, mount Sabyinyo offers one of the most challenging hikes due to its sharp ridges, requiring ladders in some sections. Reaching the summit allows climbers to stand in three countries simultaneously – Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo.
Before the hike, one needs to register at the park office, sign the guest book and clear any payments. Hiking Mount Sabinyo begins with briefing about the dos and don’ts during the experience. During the briefing session, ranger guides will let you know what to expect, the history of the mountain and what to carry along. If you don’t make it to the summit by 3pm, you are advised to descend back because it would be too late to complete the activity on time. All hikers are given a walking stick – take it like gold. Porters are available for hire for those who have heavy equipment such as cameras. You will be escorted by at least three locals. Apart from the official Guide, an armed ranger is always part of the team to scare away large mammals like elephants that graze on the slopes of the mountain.
During the hike, you can spot a number of species like the endangered mountain gorillas since the park is surrounded by Mgahinga gorilla national park of Uganda and Volcanoes national park. Other species are; golden monkeys, numerous bird species, elephants, and others.
